We are already trying

The Creative Center is yet to be built, but already the prison’s premises are used for creative activities. Festivals, concerts, workshops, and exhibitions are held in the more preserved parts of the complex. The artists in the penitentiary are supported by the Tripitaka association, which in cooperation with the TIC agency brings together the activities of creators in a joint project called Káznice žije.

The concept aims to sensitively redefine and expand the purpose of the former prison. It is a celebration of the fact that we live in a unique period that allows us to give new meaning to a former orphanage and brutal prison.

The creators working in the penitentiary are engaged in several projects. For example, the artists come together in the association Káznice Studios. The community of artists maintains studios and regularly presents their work in the penitentiary and its immediate surroundings. It also maintains contacts with foreign artists.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the Káznice Live project proved its worth. At a time when artists could not perform in front of an audience, live art moved online. The preacher’s office became a place from which quality broadcasts could be made. At the same time, live broadcasting of concerts in collaboration with the production company Gnomon Production continues even after the lifting of the anti-epidemic restrictions.

For their activities, the creative creators also use the Café In The Ghetto in the immediate vicinity of the prison, where various cultural and community events and exhibitions take place. The café is run by the Tripitaka Association as part of the Centrum Platan project, which provides services for people who have experience of mental illness. The center also includes art therapy and cultural activities held on the grounds of the prison.
